why your dog is not considered fully trained until it can reliably execute any command you give in an environment where there is a distraction or multiple distractions. Now let’s have a look at how you can work on distraction training or command proofing with your dog.

The first and most important part of distraction training is to make sure that your dog fully understands and obeys your commands in a non-distracted environment, preferably a quiet room in your house. You have to ensure that your dog understands and obeys your command, for instance “sit” , before you can expect it to complete the command in a place where there are many sights, sounds and smells vying for its attention. Once your pal can complete the sit command quickly and repeatedly you can start to slowly add distractions.

Start by adding some simple distractions. Ask another family member or a friend to come into the room walk around while you give the sit command. Practice this several times until the dog is completing the sit command. Next turn on the television while you practice you can even find a show about dogs so the sights and sounds are really distracting. Slowly add more distracting things to his environment, like other dogs, running children, and loud noises. Do all this while practicing the sit command. Once your dog is able to sit quickly on command with some distractions, start practicing in different places like the main room of your house, the backyard or even at the neighbor's house.

Keep each training session to 10-20 minutes, and stay upbeat throughout the process marking your dog’s success with “yessss” and “good boy”

Once you can see that your dog is quickly and easily obeying your commands with these simple distractions you can move to more distracted locations like a local park (not a dog park) the sidewalk along a busy street, or an outdoor mall or gathering place. You can use this process for each of the commands you would like to distraction proof but make sure that you don’t ask too much of your dog in any one session. If you see that your dog is getting stressed (panting, lip licking, yawning etc.) stop the training session and let your dog relax have some doggy fun.
Once you have practiced the commands with different levels of distraction and in a variety of locations, your dog should understand that your commands are to be followed regardless of the environment.

At Perfect Dog For Life we take distraction training seriously and believe that this is one of the most important things that we can teach your dog so that it will be safe regardless of where you and your dog go.
