One major reason of tooth loss is because of periodontal or gum disease. Since the gums provide the necessary foundation to hold the teeth in place, keeping it healthy and disease-free will help avoid tooth lose.
What is Periodontal or Gum Disease?
Periodontal disease or more commonly known as gum disease is typically a painless oral condition until it is in later stages. Our mouth is full of bacteria, precisely the reason why it is highly recommended to brush your teeth and floss everyday. These bacteria along with other elements in our mouth form a sticky substance called plaque. When this plaque hardened such that brushing and flossing may no longer be effective to remove it all, it will turn into “tartar”. When plaque and tartar continue to build up, you are more likely to develop gum disease.
Stages of Gum Disease
Gingivitis
When plaque and tartar have not been removed, they can cause inflammation to the gums. This is the first and mild stage of gum disease called gingivitis. Since it is still mild, you can get rid of it through regular brushing and flossing combined with a professional cleaning from a dentist. This will not affect the bone nor the tissue that keeps the teeth in place.
Periodontitis
Periodontitis on the other hand is the more serious gum infection. When gingivitis is not treated, it will turn into a periodontitis. It affects the tissues and damages the bones that support your teeth thus causing the tooth to loosen up leading to tooth loss. Some symptoms of gum disease includes, teeth pulling away from the gums, bleeding gums, and prolonged bad breath.
To avoid this from happening, a good daily oral care and routine dental check ups are important. You can visit Pembroke Pines Dental Associates for your dental checkups. The sooner you get the treatment, the better the outcome. We will start with the gum disease treatment right away. It is important to recognize the conditions that are known risk factors for gum disease, such as diabetes, smoking, and hormonal changes in women, etc.
