Osaka Financial, the Japan-based investment boutique and wealth manager, has announced its intention to launch a bullion exchange which will offer clients the facility to buy and sell precious metals and to have holdings stored in secure vaults in Osaka and Tokyo.

The firm says it will only deal with physical gold and silver and will provide fully-insured storage facilities for those who prefer not to take physical delivery of their holdings.

Physical precious metals have been problematic for some investors because of the security issues surrounding storage of quantities that could prove tempting for criminals in the event of a break in.

Consequently, many investors choose alternatives to physical gold and silver like exchange traded funds or ETFs. ETFs are mutual funds that issue shares in a pool that is backed by actual physical gold/silver which is stored on the client’s behalf in purpose-built and guarded 24 hours a day.

“There are a lot of rumors circulating that some exchange-traded fund providers do not actually hold the gold they say they do and that the shares they issue are, to all intents and purposes, not backed by actual metal in the warehouse. What that means is that if the investor actually decides to take delivery of the gold the fund claims to hold on his/her behalf, they would be unable to deliver effectively making the share certificate worthless,” explained Dan Carradine, commodities strategist at Osaka Financial.

The Osaka Financial service aims to fill a niche in the market by providing secure, insured storage for which it will charge a nominal monthly fee which can be deducted from the value of the client’s holding.
