A Burner Management System or BMS refers to a safety system that assures the safe start-up, function and shutdown of process burners. The BMS is very beneficial in industries like Oil and Gas, Power Generation, Chemical or any other process that needs an industrial burner, furnaces, boilers or other equipment that uses a flame.
The burner management system can monitor flames using flame detectors. It also manages igniters, burners and actuators, such as shutdown valves.
The Burner Management System performs the following functions:
Inhibit startup if the conditions are not satisfied
Monitor the burner to identify unsafe operating conditions
Protect against unsafe operating conditions
Shutdown interlocks
When the sensors can not identify the flame or observes unsafe operating conditions, the BMS gives signals to the actuators to stop the flow of fuel to the burners so that it can o inhibit the flames. Different industries generally follow 2 methods to implement a BMS: Separated or integrated.
The separated method means the traditional method to implement a safety instrumented system (SIS) and a basic control system (BPCS). The integrated method refers to a new method. It implements the solution. In this method theSIS and BPCS logic solvers and workstations run on common equipment. The logic solver respects the standards requested by the industry.
O’Brien Boiler Services Pty Ltd has come up with the OBYTRON burner management system. This system offers benefits such as improved turndown,
on board trending with a 10” touch screen oxygen trim option and many more.
