Texas refuses to renew car registrations of those 6 months in arrears

Southlake, TX – Non-custodial parents may struggle to make ends meet. Custodial parents may struggle because of the latter. Regardless of the unique situation, Nunneley Family Law is the best lawyer for Family Law in Southlake, Texas and can help parents make sense of new punishments enacted in Texas Family Code § 154.

“If child support is owed but not paid, there are several options available to family court judges which may be used to collect past due amounts and prevent further non-payments,” says Nunneley Family Law founding member Barbara Nunneley. “These may include the suspension of professional, business, driver and recreational licenses, payment of future owed sums in advance or placement of the non-paying parent in jail for contempt of court.” Now the state has added the refusal to renew car registrations to the list of potential consequences.

Family Code § 154 governs child support and the law here changes each year when politicians write new rules. The law currently states the most critical factor for deciding how much in child support should be paid is the family’s net resources. The family’s net resources include:

• Assets by way of all income – wages, interest, dividends, royalties, rental income, etc.
• Minus various deductions – health insurance, taxes, union dues, etc.

Generally, one child receives 20% of the above net resource calculation, two children 25%, three children 30%, four children 35%, five children 40%, and six or more children 40% or more.
This is not as frightening as it may sound. Texas lawmakers placed a cap of $8,550 on child support in 2018. This means that child support will never be higher than $8,550 regardless of net resources.

Each year, the laws change based upon the enactment of new rules. Nunneley Family Law has the best lawyers for Family Law in Southlake, Texas, and can help you navigate the always-changing terrain of child support and family laws.
