Guide to Buying LED Lighting

Switching to LED (Light Emitting Diodes) draws in many benefits for you as well as for our environment through their efficiency in lighting and the innovative designs and technology used to create them.

Here’s what you should look out for when buying LED lighting:

Efficiency

When comparing to incandescent lighting, LEDs use lesser watts and have an efficiency of more than 5 times. They are also more durable in comparison to regular traditional lighting.

Brightness

One of the biggest mistakes you can make is checking the brightness of the LED bulb from its wattage. The brightness of LED products is measured in Lumens (lm) and not Watts. This is because LED lights consume fewer watts than halogens and incandescent bulbs and it would be difficult to determine the actual brightness through watts.

Mercury

Since LEDs contain no mercury, they can be easily disposed of and won’t cause any harmful effects to the environment.

Dimming Features

Unlike the LEDs of the past, most of the modern generation can dim to a warmer light. This feature helps to save energy further as well as lower the color temperature.

Lifespan

One of the major benefits of shifting to LED lighting is its long lifespan. Some lighting has a lengthier lifespan of up to 50,000 hours which could last approximately 20 years if used 6 hours a day.

LED vs Fluorescent
Both are more efficient compared to incandescent. However, fluorescents are made of glass tubes and can shatter easily if dropped, they also contain traces of mercury. When compared between the two, LEDs are more durable where products such as the LED Neon Rope light are shatter-proof. They also contain no mercury, making them easy to dispose of once they reach the end of their time.

Best Places to Use LED
Simply put, they can be used anywhere since there is a wide range of fixtures available to match your requirements. Products usually come with a rating that helps us to identify if they are suitable for indoors or outdoors. Here are some locations LEDs would be ideal to use:

Residential Lighting - Living Rooms, Bathrooms, Basements, Gardens

Commercial Lighting - Offices, Hospitals, Hotels/Motels, Retail Outlets, Departmental Stores, Outdoor Basketball/Tennis Courts

Industrial Lighting - Warehouses, Shipyards, Factories

Street Lighting

Art Lighting - LEDs does not produce UV rays unlike the incandescent making them safe for artwork

The Lifespan of an LED
When reaching the end of their lifespan incandescents die-out abruptly. LEDs, however, dim down gradually once they reach their end. They are usually considered dead when they reach 70% of the initial light.

The Correct CCT
CCT or Correlated Color Temperature is another important aspect to consider when buying LED lights. Warm Whites, Neutral Whites, Cool Whites, the names may differ among the manufacturers but what you must focus on is the Kelvin Number. Higher the Kelvin number is cooler the color temperature would be. The color temperature that varies from warm, neutral to cool can set the mood of your space, so it is important to select the correct CCT. You would not want a cozy, relaxing color temperature for your office or workspace.
