Exploring Breast Conserving Treatments

The founder and lead surgeon of the North Texas Cancer Center at Wise explains that women may have options.

Decatur, TX – It used to be a positive diagnosis of breast cancer was almost a guarantee that a radical mastectomy would follow. This is beginning to change as some patients with early stages of breast cancer fully explore their options and learn that breast conserving treatments may provide a viable alternative.

“The number of lumpectomies being performed is starting to rise,” says Dr. Gregory Echt, founder and lead surgeon at the North Texas Cancer Center at Wise. “This is excellent news for women who are deemed good candidates for this option as it enables them to fight the disease while enjoying a slightly less invasive experience in the process.”

Research showing the rise in popularity of the lumpectomy procedure comes from the Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. Researchers there looked at early-stage breast cancer cases diagnosed between 1998 and 2011. A total of 727,900 cases were reviewed. Investigators found that women between the ages of 52 and 61 were more likely to choose breast-sparing procedures as were women with higher educational levels. Private insurance also seemed to play a role with lower-income patients more likely to opt for more extensive procedures. All told, researchers found the number of breast-sparing procedures in 1998 was 54.3 percent. By 2011, it had climbed to 60.1 percent.

“Breast conserving procedures can prove highly effective in cases where the cancer is caught as early as possible,” Dr. Echt says. “The key involves vigilance in early screening procedures and acting while this option is still viable. Not all patients, however, will find lumpectomies advised in their cases.”

Women who are diagnosed with breast cancer are urged to review all their options with their healthcare provider. Those who have not yet begun routine screenings through self-examinations and routine medical checkups should also seek out medical advice.
