Ayubowan (hello), my dear readers!
Let me start by saying: Sri Lanka is a country of surprises. From sun-kissed, warm-water beaches to lush green landscapes, ancient temples to delectable culinary traditions and amazing wildlife, this small island packs an extraordinary punch. But if there’s one thing the country truly excels at, it’s the art of hospitality – understanding its visitors and crafting experiences that leave a lasting impression. At the heart of it all, in the bustling city of Colombo, lies Cinnamon Life – City of Dreams, a destination that invites you to become the experience. And over my three-day visit, that’s exactly what I did.
At first glance, the striking façade might feel a little intimidating – an expansive moonstone-hued blend of concrete and glass designed by the renowned architect Cecil Balmond. But step inside, and you’ll find yourself in a world where the thrill of discovery meets the comforting embrace of home. With 687 thoughtfully designed rooms, 12 exceptional restaurants and bars, and installations by some of Sri Lanka’s most celebrated artists, every corner invites awe. And the best part? A front-row seat to the endless, breathtaking expanse of the Indian Ocean.
A Breakfast Buffet That’s A Chef’s Kiss
If there were a championship for breakfast buffets, this one would take the crown – no contest! Imagine an endless feast (and we’re not exaggerating) with fresh seafood, aromatic Sri Lankan curries, kothu, sticky coconut rice, a dedicated bread station, and a dessert lineup that feels downright indulgent. But if there’s one thing I refused to skip during my time at Quizine, it was the Egg Hoppers and String Hoppers – seriously, how has the rest of the world not caught on to this brilliance yet?
An Exquisite Fusion Of International Flavours
Thanks to its 12 restaurants and bars, Cinnamon Life at City of Dreams ensures you never have to step out for a memorable meal – and, with such an incredible variety, you’ll never tire of dining in either!
For seafood lovers, Bistro des Marées is a must-visit (hello, Tuna Tartare!). If juicy, perfectly-grilled steaks are more your speed, Staten Bar and Grill, the American steakhouse, is the place to be. Meanwhile, Indiya, helmed by Chef Bhairav Singh, takes Indian cuisine to another level – plus, its cocktails are unlike anything you’ve ever tasted. Yoroko, a fine-dining Japanese restaurant, made our visit even more special as we arrived during Wine Week. We indulged in a four-course meal expertly paired with aged champagnes, curated by French wine connoisseur Jean-Noël Girard. And, trust me, the soft-shell crab salad? A sensory delight.
Gatz, the stunning two-level bar, looks like it was plucked straight from a movie set. For a more intimate vibe, Cloud Wine offers the perfect escape for wine lovers, while Dreams & Beats, the poolside bar, is made for golden-hour cocktails. Whatever you do, don’t leave without trying its Sri Lankan-inspired drinks – especially the showstoppers Live Long The King and In A Pickle. Now, if you ask me, my ultimate favourite – the dish that had me actually emotional when I realised it was my last bite – was the Cantonese Red Rice Roll with Shrimp at Sapphire Dragon. And, as if that weren’t enough, the Crab Meat Fried Rice and Wok-Fried B**f Noodles weren’t just delicious; they were downright unforgettable.
A Sanctuary Of Luxury & Healing At Kurundu
From the moment you step inside, Kurundu, the Spa at Cinnamon Life, envelops you in an ambiance of serenity and indulgence – where soft lighting, calming aromas, and warm hospitality come together to transport you to a world of pure relaxation. The treatment menu is thoughtfully curated, featuring a mix of signature massages, rejuvenating facials, and traditional therapies inspired by Ayurveda and Sri Lankan healing rituals. I opted for the signature full-body massage, which combined aromatic oils and skilled techniques to melt away tension and leave me feeling utterly refreshed. Post-treatment, you’re invited to unwind at the serene relaxation lounge, sipping herbal teas and soaking in the peaceful vibes – an ideal way to end your spa journey.
Events, Arts And Entertainment Galore
From the elegant Lumina Ballroom and Celestine Ballroom to the versatile Forum, open-air Podium, and exclusive Event Studio, clients have the perfect spaces to bring their vision to life. The Event Studio offers a private setting on the 24th floor, where clients can meet chefs, decorators, and other partners to sample menus, taste beverages, and choose table décor, ensuring every detail is curated to perfection.
For The Love Of Art
A stroll through the halls of Cinnamon Life at City of Dreams reveals how its architecture and interiors beautifully honour Sri Lanka’s rich cultural heritage. From curated art pieces to the use of raw, organic textures in design, every detail tells a story. The Artist Spotlight section, which rotates every few months, further reinforces this commitment by celebrating and preserving Sri Lankan artistry. This initiative showcases the works of renowned local artists, ensuring their talent and heritage remain at the heart of the experience.
So What Are You Waiting For?
A visionary creation from the John Keells Group, one of Sri Lanka’s leading hospitality giants, Cinnamon Life at City of Dreams stands as one of the country’s most ambitious projects to date. But it’s more than just a place to stay – it’s poised to become the heartbeat of Colombo, seamlessly weaving together entertainment, art, music, fashion, and culinary excellence under one roof. And, with even more exciting developments on the horizon, this dynamic destination is set to attract visitors from every corner of the globe. So, the only question left is: When are you making your way here?
