Manufacturers produce a wide variety of plastic bottles, including water bottles, soda bottles and food containers such as mustard or ketchup. Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) is a particularly favorite product for the production of any bottle that comes into contact with food or drinking water. PET is a plastic resin derived from petroleum hydrocarbons. Producers make long-chain plastic molecules through a process called polymerization, which is then mixed with several compounds. They cut the resin into small pieces and sent it to the bottle manufacturer. The bottle factory mixes PET resin pellets with "recycled" plastic, which has become thin. Plastics lose some physical properties when heated repeatedly, so manufacturers must limit the amount of regrind they use, usually limiting this ingredient to 10% of the total mixture. Dyes are introduced into the mixture unless a clear bottle is produced.
Preform

The extruder melts the PET at a temperature of about 500 degrees Fahrenheit and remills the mixture. The screw in the extruder compresses the PET mixture and injects the nearly molten material into the mold. The mold produces a bottle preform, sometimes referred to as a parison. The preform looks like a thick-walled test tube and usually includes a spiral top that is unique to the bottle. The preform will cool as it is transported to a machine called a blow molding machine and may need to be returned to the temperature specified by the manufacturer for the operation. If necessary, the bottle manufacturer will raise the temperature of the preform in a small oven.
