Remote Work Can Help Reduce Turnover

AUSTIN, 5 December, 2022 — There are dozens of reasons why businesses should consider offering remote jobs if they’re not doing so already, but avoiding costly turnover rates is likely another to add to that list. Hundreds of US companies saw an increase in turnover this year, as the Great Resignation or Great Reshuffling continued in full swing. With research showing a high percentage of turnover was due to employees leaving to accept better benefits — like remote or flexible work — from other companies, Remote Worker CEO Joseph Boll says this is an area where businesses can likewise implement remote work to regain a competitive edge.

Remote Worker is an online jobs board and resource website for remote workers, remote work jobseekers, and hiring managers, employers and HR personnel seeking to recruit and hire the top talent for remote positions.

“Is it mere coincidence that turnovers have increased this year, despite fear of recession, at the same time businesses were forcing staff to return to the office? Doubtful,” said Boll. “The reason why some experts were calling it a ‘Great Reshuffling’ rather than ‘Great Recession’ is because workers who resigned mostly weren’t leaving the workforce — they were leaving one company that did not offer what they were looking for and going to work at another company that was more in line with their goals.”

Boll added, “In many cases, the kind of work-life balance offered by remote work made the difference in those employee’s choices.”

As such, the CEO emphasizes that this is no time for companies to turn a blind eye to what current and prospective employees want most out of their working environment. Rather, he said doing so can prove to be costly in terms of the company’s bottom line as well as its workload — which can in turn have a ripple effect for remaining employees.

Some studies estimate that American businesses lose nearly $100,000 per year in turnover costs, with nearly 50% of companies reporting higher turnover rates this year. When stating the reason for turnovers, businesses said some 40% were due to staff resigning or otherwise leaving to accept jobs with better benefits. However, Boll suggests that companies stand to avoid this by taking heed of what current and prospective workers want — with the vast majority of Americans strongly favoring remote work.
