Its History
Wokingham’s origins are Saxon. The town was most likely a village founded by the Woccingas tribe who lived nearby. At some point, possibly before the Norman invasion, a liberal church was established in a ‘clearing the Woods’ at the edge of Windsor Forest. “Clearing on the Woods” has become the oldest street Rose street, Le Rothe. It was from this beginning that the medieval town would develop.

The city flourished during the Middle Ages with fairs, cattle markets, and established industries including bell foundries. But this initial prosperity ended with the English Civil War. Wokingham was caught between two opposing factions, the Royalists and the MPs, both of whom plundered the town for horses and food. But it was the Cavaliers that burned down the town in October 1643, when thirty houses making up about a third of the town burned down.
