Author of A Notebook of Love, Luis Trivinio, provides a breakdown of the book in 7 chapters of experiencing mental health.

Deteriorating mental health played a huge role in Luis Trivino's life before he began working on his new book, A Notebook of Love. Before he could write it all down, he had to conclude that he and his wife were struggling together and on their own to get through everyday life. As a military veteran, a husband, and a father – Luis realized that he needed to work twice as hard to make his marriage and family work.

Both Trivino and his wife knew what they were dealing with, and how they dealt it together speaks volumes of their 16-year long journey as a married couple. To defy the stereotypes and myths associated with their conditions, Trivino states the following in his book, "How did we last for 15 years when the norm for someone with BPD is seven years? Because of our disabilities combined and the risks, we may have tripled the success rate. But who knows? For us, we pride our marriage on the following tenets: We are both committed, both dedicated, we accept each other, COMMUNICATION, and LOVE. So perhaps by now, wondering how did we get here?"

The book, A Notebook of Love, expands greatly on how Luis Trivino and his family handled the mental illnesses, and how they are still struggling after a year of practice. The seven-chapter book is a detailed account of Trivino's life, and his attempts to save his marriage.

A breakdown of the book is as follows:
- Trivino places great importance on loving people despite their mental illnesses. He says you need to keep loving the person and accept that they deal with a problem, they need your help with. It often works both ways in a relationship.
- Trivino's PTSD and bipolar disorder stems from childhood abuse that he experienced because of his father. His experiences taught him how not to be the man his father was; his experiences taught him how to be a better father.
- Being the oldest son, Trivino had responsibility and his parents' aspirations attached to his own. In the chapter, The Oldest Son, he speaks about his experiences with responsibility, abuse, and more.
- In the chapter Whirlwind, Trivino talks about his experiences as a new military recruit and how his brain works perfectly when he's in a state of emergency. He speaks of his experiences with pride and confidence.
- The Tidal Wave chapter talks about how his experiences, trauma, and reluctance to accept them paved the way for his marriage to hit the rocks. They struggled to be together but stayed civil for the children, which made a lot of difference.
- The chapter My Notebook Love describes his relationship with his wife and how both of them struggle with serious mental health issues, which is also why they work so well together. He talks about their journey to mental recovery, or at least its beginning.
- In the last chapter of his book, Trivino talks about becoming a man by accepting, acknowledging, remedying past mistakes, and actively asking for help.

Trivino is a military veteran that has PTSD and bipolar disorder. He's a new aspiring author that has written his first book, A Notebook of Love, as a love note to his wife and their struggling relationship.
