Krishna has been a prominent figure in the Hindu writings. He is revered all over the world by his devotees. The actual celebration of Janmashtami takes place during the midnight as Sri Krishna is believed to be born on a dark, stormy and windy night to end the evil and spread positivity. All over the nation this day is celebrated with devotional songs and dances, puja/archana, arti, blowing of the trumpets, lighting and swinging the bal gopal jhula, welcoming the Lord with warmth and love.

The festival is profoundly celebrated all over the world. Across India, several ceremonies and prayers are embraced at temples dedicated to Shri Krishna. Many devotees practice fasting the day before and pray to the Lord up to midnight, the time marking Krishna’s birth. Janmashtami is celebrated with great enthusiasm by Hindus across the Indian subcontinent and beyond. However in some regions of India the celebrations are at its peak.

The birth place of Krishna- Krishna was born in Mathura, Uttar Pradesh. He spent his life in Gokul, Mathura and Vrindavan, In these regions, the celebrations start a week before and people from across the world visit these destinations at this time of the year to witness the chaste aura, the intensive decorations and the magical view. It is a common tradition to perform Krishna Lila, a folk drama consisting of scenes from Krishna's life and also playing games like dahi-handi and other to mark the celebrations.

Rituals
On the preceding day devotees keep a vigil and fast until midnight, the traditional hour of Lord’s birth. Then the image of Krishna is bathed in water and milk, dressed in new kanha ji poshak, and is worshipped with full gusto as devotees sing devotional songs and dance for Krishna. Temples and household shrines are decorated with leaves and fresh flowers, the celebrations end with sweet offering to the God and then among the devotees.

Janmashtami is a public holiday. It is a day off for the general public, schools and most businesses are also closed on this day.
