MAPS.ME is a mapping tool designed to make their users' travel experience safer and works offline.

MAPS.ME (former MapsWithMe) is a mapping tool designed to make their users' travel experience safer and more comfortable. The maps and all built-in features like search, bookmarks and route planning work completely offline and do not require internet connection. What clearly differentiates MAPS.ME is that it covers all the countries and all the cities of the world in one map.

MAPS.ME uses a special data compressing method which makes the size of map files incredibly small, while still maintaining the highest level of detail. For example, the full detailed map of Switzerland is just 162 MB (218 MB with routing), while the map of Thailand is 51MB (121 MB with routing). As a result, maps are downloaded fast, zooming in and out is very smooth and, equally important, the phone's memory usage is very efficient.

Today MAPS.ME is represented in most popular app stores (App Store, Google Play) and is among top-5 travel apps on the App Store and Google Play in almost all countries. MAPS.ME was included in the list of The Best Russian Apps of 2015 and 2016 by Google Play. MAPS.ME user base in July of 2016 reached 50 million downloads.

MAPS.ME started in 2011 with the launch of the Lite version for iOS, but its popularity spiked in 2012 when it became multi-platform after the Android version release.

2014 became a milestone year for MAPS.ME. The app changed its name from MapsWithMe to MAPS.ME and underwent a series of improvements, including serious changes of the app user interface, release of address search and offline route planning.

In November 2014 MAPS.ME was acquired by Mail.Ru Group, one of the largest internet companies in Europe. The acquisition will enable My.com, Mail.Ru Group's subsidiary focused on global audiences, to offer additional products and services to a growing base of users. Mail.Ru Group made MAPS.ME free after the purchase.

In September 2015 MAPS.ME gone open source under the Apache 2.0 license, which means free usage for users, even when being used for commercial purposes.

Walking directions feature appeared in MAPS.ME at the end of the August 2015 followed by bike navigation in June of 2016. Voice navigation available in 26 languages was featured in the end of 2015; hotel search and reservation through Booking.com was introduced in the middle of 2016.
