Lakeland, FL - Ford has been producing some excellent cars, and the Mustang is one of their most cherished creations. It has stood the test of time and continues to rule the roads of America. In fact, the Mustang will be the only car produced by Ford moving forward. People view it as a prized possession, and many are looking to add some vintage Mustangs to their collections. There are numerous reasons to consider purchasing a used Mustang. Mustang Driver explains the features and specifications of each generation to assist you in purchasing the Mustang of your choice.

The Mustang has a long and illustrious history. Although performance is an important part of Mustang's history and reputation, there is also something indescribably unique about Mustangs. People like the nostalgic muscle car look, but they also like how simple it is to work on Mustangs.

Because the Mustang is by far the most popular pony car, it's not difficult to find used listings. Used Mustangs are available from dealerships, local independent sellers, and even online retailers. It all depends on your search criteria.

CHOICE OF THE MUSTANG GENERATION
Every generation of the Mustang has its own unique advantages and disadvantages, and each provides a very different used car experience. These are the tips and advice we've gathered over the years to help you find the best used Mustang for your needs.

First Generation Mustangs, 1964-1973: The Classic Pony
If you're looking for a Mustang primarily for nostalgic reasons and don't mind getting some grease under your fingernails, first generation Mustangs are a great option. Since first-generation Mustangs were designed to be highly customizable, the possible combinations of features are practically limitless. However, depending on how you use the car, you'll inevitably find some features that are missing.

Mustang II, 1974–1978: Potential Unrealized
Okay, bear with me here. Even though it has received a lot of criticism, the Mustang II enjoyed great popularity during its time of production. These are some of the lightest and most fuel-efficient Mustang body styles, and due to the unjustified hatred, they can be found for a very low price.

In 1975, you could get a Mustang with a V8, and the Cobra II package was hugely popular at the time and is still considered one of the more appealing special editions.

Fox Body Mustangs, 1979-1993: A Budget-Friendly Option
The Fox Body Mustangs are quickly losing their economy title as people realize what enthusiasts have been screaming since the Fox first appeared. With a few simple modifications, these tiny cars can reach high speeds. More importantly, they are made in a way that makes modifications incredibly simple. Finding parts for the Fox Bodies won't be difficult, whether you want to perform an engine swap or something a little less difficult, like installing disc brakes.

New Edge Mustangs from 1994 to 2004 and SN95:
Similar to the Fox Body Mustangs, the SN95 and New Edge Mustangs were not well received when they were first released but have since grown in recognition. These Mustangs are one of the more affordable options available for someone looking to buy a Mustang because they are recent enough to not be considered classics but too old to be considered modern. The facelifted 1999–2004 models are referred to as "New Edge" due to their exterior styling, while the entire 1994–2004 generation is referred to as "SN95."

The issues with the SN95 and New Edge Mustangs are typical of that era's vehicles. Compared to a 2018 Mustang, they don't have as many safety features. You'll be lucky to get a CD player; Bluetooth is not standard, and antilock brakes weren't made mandatory until 2011.

2005–2014 S197 Mustang: A Cozy and Affordable Daily Driver
At its unveiling, the newly redesigned Mustang caused quite a stir. The vintage styling mixed with modern features piqued people's interest. Many of these are new to the market and are reasonably priced.

The fantastic thing about these cars is that you get the timeless design as well as the safety features that have been added over time. Finding one that has been well-maintained and has good mileage is also much simpler.

The majority of Mustangs from this generation will be equipped to serve as your daily driver while also allowing you to upgrade and install new and improved Mustang aftermarket components.

S550 2015-2020: Reward Yourself
In recent years, the Ford Mustang new models have undergone significant evolution. Improved safety features include seat belts and SYNC3, which will dial 911 on your behalf in the event of an accident.
The third generation of Coyote engines has more horsepower than the first two generations (on a good day). It has a rear suspension that is independent. It features paddle shifters.

Since they are the newest, every recent automobile innovation imaginable is available. This Mustang is for you if you're looking for a comfortable vehicle with more features than you'll probably ever use.

GO AFTER THAT PONY!
It's all about going out and pursuing the Mustang once you've decided which model you want to buy and which methods you're willing to use to make the purchase. As soon as you find a used car, don't forget to prepare for what comes next. Depending on the model you're looking at, you might encounter stiff competition and a protracted search, or you might discover it right away.
