The Gokyo Lake trek is perfect for people who wish to trek in the Everest province, but who want more variety of views and fewer nights spent at very high altitude.

Nepal. 10th July, 2017 - The glittering, pristine blue & green waters of the Gokyo Lakes are one of Nepal’s most unforgettable sights. They boast the highest freshwater lake system in the planet, at around 5,000m. The Gokyo Lake trek is perfect for people who wish to trek in the Everest province, but who want more variety of views and fewer nights spent at very high altitude.

This is one of the more adventurous treks in the Everest Himalayas, following the high route pass of Cho La (5330m) into the Base Camp of Mt Everest. This ascent pursues the Dudh Koshi and Khumbu valleys from the homeland of the Sherpa people to the Gokyo valley, which provides breath-taking views of four 8,000m peaks; Everest, Cho Oyu, Makalu and the largest glacier in Nepal, the Ngozumpa glacier. We visit the turquoise Gokyo lakes before following the footsteps of the yeti over the high route pass of Cho La (5330m) into the Base Camp of Mt Everest.

Following the Dudh Koshi river valley brings you towards the bustling market town of Namche Bazaar which has a great atmosphere, perfect for soaking up the magnificent mountain scenery. Awe-inspiring views of some of the biggest mountains in the world provide a dramatic backdrop as you venture further into the Khumbu valley. After trekking to Gokyo, the return follows the route through Everest Base Camp, an ascent of Kalar Pattar for close-up views of Everest, down to the stunning Tengboche Monastery, Khumjung village, Namche Bazaar and finally back to Lukla.

This is an extremely difficult trek that requires high levels of fitness. Sustaining through a 14 day trek is no mean feat. There are at least four high points on this trek which go over 17,000 ft: the Gokyo Ri summit (17, 575 ft), Cho la Pass ( 17, 782 ft) , Everest Base Camp (17, 600 ft) and Kala Patthar (18, 513 ft). On most days, you will be trekking for over 7-8 hours in an altitude that is not too friendly. There are a few tricky sections on this trek: crossing Ngozumpa glacier and Cho la Pass. Ngozumpa glacier is prone to rockfall and Cho la Pass is riddled with crevasses. These two section need to be trodden with care.
