Self drilling rock bolt is a new anchoring method, which was introduced from foreign countries and then was improved according to our own characters. It can adapt to different and complex geological and construction conditions. There are several successful examples in railway engineering in China.

As an advanced construction technology, self drilling rock bolt has been widely used in different construction projects. There are several tips need to be noticed before installing rock bolt.


1. The material of self drilling rock bolt should adopt high strength screw-thread steel or high strength plastic steel. Its diameter and length should be chosen according to stratum’s stability and design requirement.


2. When resin anchorage agent is used in solid stratum, the anchorage length shouldn’t be less one third than the length of self drilling rock bolt; in loose stratum, anchorage length should be overall.


3. Self drilling rock bolt can be used with anchor cable jointly if necessary. The carrying capacity of self drilling rock bolt shouldn’t be less than 100 KN and anchor cable shouldn’t less than 250 KN. The strength of plate should be matched with self drilling rock bolt’s carrying capacity.


4. In principle, self drilling rock bolt and anchor cable should be vertical with rock surface. Installation quality should be tested strictly.


5. When drilling or installing self drilling rock bolt, reliable temporary support is necessary.
