A university in United Kingdom recently opened a new college degree course which specializes in the aim of enhancing the safety of cosmetic surgery. Anglia Ruskin University announced that it hopes to retain the best quality surgeons. This way British surgeons don’t have to go abroad to get further studies. Although there were a lot of oppositions in the offering of the course as they deemed it an unnecessary addition.

UK qualified plastic surgeons undergo training in the Royal College of Surgeons before they can fully practice their profession. However, according to Professor James Frame who is a surgeon in the said university said that there are newly-qualified surgeons who lack expertise. Though surgeons are trained to repair reconstructive works like burns of the patient, Prof. Frames said they can’t carry out cosmetic works such as facelifts.

The reason is that these works are usually carried out in private practice. "Aesthetic plastic surgery is a rapidly enlarging super-specialty that requires recognition in its own right.” Says Professor Frame, "At present a newly qualified, fully-accredited plastic surgeon is released, totally lacking any experience in aesthetic plastic surgery, and is able to operate in the private sector.” And He also adds, "There are many competent surgeons but at present there are too many under-qualified surgeons, particularly from elsewhere in the EU, coming over here and operating."

Another reason for these things is the recent PIP breast implant scandal which resulted to about 600 women having substandard implants removed. It highlighted the need for improved care. Further, Frame said, "If aesthetic surgery is recognized as a specialty, with its own qualification, then clearly the public will benefit because it will help them to easily identify and employ a qualified surgeon here in the UK."

Dr. Gary Motykie, a prominent surgeon facelift of Beverly Hills have heard about this and said, “We are dealing with lives here and any wrong move could lead to something we wouldn’t want to see. For that, we really need to train the new generation of surgeons.”

These words of concern from professionals can only lead to one conclusion, training is necessary for a successful practice of plastic surgery procedures.
