Botox have recently been known to treat common migraine or headache episodes according to a certain study. It was published in the Journal of the American Medical Association. However, careful analysis states that it only give modest relief for patients with headaches. It was found out that Botox really have no great benefit for those who are having episodic migraines which commonly happens more than fifteen times in a certain month. But the same analysis show that Botox can only reduce chronic migraines and daily headaches that happen only two per month.

Botox was already approved for cure of chronic migraines last 2010. The latest findings are seeking all the available studies to reveal which headaches the treatment helps and which one it doesn’t. The head of the study, Jeffrey Jackson said, “Botox does appear to have a benefit for people appearing to suffer from chronic migraines and chronic daily headaches, the benefit is only a reduction of two to three headaches a month and that’s in people who have a minimum of 15 headaches a month. So that’s not a large benefit. For people having headaches less than 14 days a month or anyone with a tension headache, it clearly doesn’t work.”

Robert Duarte, the director of the Pain Center at Cushing Neuroscience Institute found in New York says otherwise. He claims that the analysis included studies with various doses of which, many are lower than the current US approved ones. That’s the reason why results are showing small benefits.

“It still demonstrates that for chronic migraines this is the treatment of choice,” says Dr. Duarte. “We have seen clinically that patients’ headaches have been significantly reduced. It is not a cure. It is maintenance therapy. This is the best treatment that we have to date.”

The researchers made an analysis on 27 different studies regarding Botox against placebo drugs. They also have looked on 4 studies that compare Botox against other migraine drugs. The figures in the studies included 5, 213 total number of patients. 1, 938 of them had episodic migraines, 1, 544 had chronic migraines, 616 had chronic tension headaches and 1, 115 had chronic daily headaches. The analysis revealed that Botox have reduced the number of chronic migraines in a certain month to about 17.2 from 19.5 and it decreased the number of chronic daily headaches from 17.5 to 15.4 which are all on average.

Dr. Gary Motykie of http://motykiemedspa.com/ says, “Botox isn’t just for aesthetic purposes, we really should do our part to maximize its benefits and help those who are in need. What they’ve done [analysis] just proves our eagerness to bring the best out of what we have.”

No matter what they’re conclusions are; the most important thing is that they should get the right facts and samples for the studies. We all aim to bring out the best of such a medicine so there’s really a need to maximize its potential.
