A new study has been made, the satisfaction rate of those who have undergone cosmetic surgery procedures are higher for those who are older or are taking anti-depression treatments as compared to those who are not. This was a study done by the cosmetic surgeons from the University Of Michigan.
They surveyed 35 women and 16 men before and after they have undergone facial surgery. They assessed every patient’s characteristics like marital status, education, medical history, personality. The results were quite astonishing.
2/3 of the patients admitted that they were satisfied with results. They scored 8 or above on a scale of 1-10. Nearly a quarter scored a perfect 1. The doctors themselves weren’t even satisfied with their works. Surprisingly, 20 patients who scored higher were actually taking anti-depressants. This was actually the opposite than what the researchers were expecting.
Dr. Jeffrey Moyer a surgeon at the University Of Michigan said "I'm not sure exactly what that means; I think it speaks to how complex depression is."The former president of the American Academy Of Cosmetic Surgery, Dr. Steven Hopping told what he saw at his practice in Washington, D.C. "A lot of people are taking these medications [anti-depressants], and maybe it does help their response…"
Cosmetic surgery patients experience a period of “let-down” according to surgeons. That’s 5 to 10 days after the procedure. This can happen with any other highly anticipated event such as wedding or birth of a baby. In cosmetic surgery, patients sometimes experience buyer’s remorse. Anti-depressants may help with these let-down moments.
"Patients who are a little older generally have more realistic expectations, whether they have their face lifted or their eyes tightened, it's not going to make or break their life. For younger patients, there's often a lot more riding on this,” Hopping said.
Another plastic surgeon, Dr. Brent Moelleken of http://www.livefill.com said, “We should do everything to make our patients feel satisfied. I am glad that my colleagues have thought of this kind of study…”
Before the patients undergo facelift or nose jobs, both [the patient] and the surgeon needs to be on the same understanding with regards to the things they want to achieve. This should include their motivations for undergoing the procedure. The satisfaction of the results all boils down to the relationship of the surgeon to his patient.
