Bariatric surgery is a weight loss surgery involving various hormone-altering procedures. This surgery is a long term weight loss solution that changes the release of gut hormones that control hunger and satiation. By setting new hormone levels, the patient loses weight and continues to maintain that weight effectively.

Types of surgical options

Here are the different types of bariatric surgery:

1. Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass

This surgery takes place in two parts. In the first part, the surgeon divides the stomach into two sections using staples. This creates a small pouch, making the stomach smaller resulting in eating less.

The second part involves cutting and reconnecting a part of the small intestine with the newly created pouch. This results in the food bypassing a major portion of the digestive system to lessen calorie absorption. There are changes in gut health, gut bacteria, metabolism, and appetite.

This is an irreversible procedure. This method also gets the fastest results.

2. Sleeve Gastrectomy

This procedure involves removing a major part of the stomach by vertically dividing using staples to create a slim banana-like sleeve. As a result, the amount of food your stomach can hold is significantly reduced. You feel fuller sooner and less hungry.

The small intestine remains intact. This is also a permanent procedure.

3. Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Band

Every laparoscopic surgeon in Delhi will first place an inflatable band and ring around the upper portion of the stomach and inflate it with a saline solution. This ring is accessible through a device called port which is placed below the skin of your abdomen.
The amount of slime solution can be lessened or increased using the port. This determines how tight the opening from the upper stomach to the lower stomach will be. This procedure requires several follow-up sessions. It is reversible; if the ring is causing problems or isn't helping you lose enough weight, you remove it. For these procedures, patient selection is very important.

4. Duodenal Switch

This type of surgery is also known as biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch. This is the most complex weight loss surgery in Gurgaon, requiring two surgeries. In the first surgery, the surgeon will make the stomach a vertical sleeve.

Then, 12-18 months after the first surgery comes the second one. The other sections of the stomach are connected to the small intestine. This results in the food bypassing most of the small intestine and malabsorption of major nutrients and calories. This surgery is open to the largest risk. Surgeons try to avoid this procedure wherever possible.

5. Revisional surgery

Though this isn't major bariatric surgery, it is important to mention that complications in the initial procedure may require more surgery. Revisional surgery is meant to correct those complications.

There are several factors such as age, physical health, and other complications that need to be assessed beforehand. If done by the best bariatric surgeon in Gurgaon, patients may even recover from diabetes, lower the risk of cardiovascular problems, and reduce the mortality rate. Do your research before going forward with such surgery.
