Luxury Bed Sheet Company and Seattle Non-Profit Step Up In Time of Crisis

California Design Den, Inc., a leader in natural, sustainable, chemical-free cotton bedding products, today revealed a recent materials contribution to the Refugee Artisans Initiative of Seattle, WA, for the purpose of manufacturing comfortable, washable, protective cotton face masks for health care professionals and concerned citizens.

Now that the US Surgeon General and the Center for Disease Control (CDC) have recommended that all citizens wear protective face masks in public, California Design Den, Inc and the Refugee Artisans Initiative are partnering to help relieve the profound shortage of personal protective equipment (PPE) that has characterised the pandemic crisis. California Design Den contributed 100 sets of its highest-end, 1,00o thread-count, all cotton sheets to the effort, which has a goal of producing one thousand hand-sewn masks per day and distributing those to facilities and organizations in need.

“It is time for all patriotic Americans to come together in this time of crises and do what we can to support our heroic health care workers and to protect the general public,” said Deepak Mehrotra, co-founder and CEO of California Design Den, Inc. “Partnering with the Refugee Artisans Initiative enables us to work with skilled artisans who share our values of fair trade, fair labor, and environmental protection.”

Based in Seattle, the Refugee Artisan Initiative (RAI) is a nonprofit, tax-exempt charitable organization (tax identification number 82-0961407) under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. The non-profit helps immigrant women develop new skills and have sustainable home-based employment that improves the lives of their entire families. RAI hires and trains immigrant women; enables them to work from home in an enterprise that needs little space; helps overcome language, transportation, and cultural barriers to employment; pays the Seattle-mandated minimum hourly wage; and, uses recycled and repurposed materials, so goods produced are easy on the environment.

During a 100 year pandemic, healthy fabric choices may not seem significant to most, but they do make a difference to RAI and to experts. “While not much is known about how this particular virus interacts with clothing and fabric, “coronaviruses in general last a lot longer on a solid, nonporous surface compared to porous fabrics,” said Juan Dumois, a pediatric infectious-diseases physician at Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital in St. Petersburg, Fla., in an article published in MarketWatch. He suggested they would survive better on “artificial fibers” such as polyester than on cotton.1

Social and environmental responsibility are the cornerstones of California Design Den’s mission. The company’s all natural cotton product line is produced in a company-owned, socially responsible workplace that carries the “Made in Green” certification from OTEO-TEX which guarantees that textiles have been manufactured sustainably in environmentally friendly conditions in a socially responsible workplace.

Incorporated in 2006, the Co-founders first created a bed sheet manufacturing unit for large retailers and brands, and then the California Design Den® brand was launched in 2016 to provide individual consumers with natural, high-quality cotton sheets, including organic cotton, for an affordable price. California Design Den, Inc. (415) 423-1401, is a leader in the design and manufacture of sustainable, natural, cotton bedding products. The firm’s operations and sales office is headquartered at 3001 Bishop Dr # 300, San Ramon, CA 94583.
