India, as a large agrarian economy, has had a long relationship with dairy production, dating back to the Vedic era. India's dairy farming industry accounts for 4% of the country's GDP.

As there is constant demand for these goods in India, this is a very lucrative industry. Our fundamental diet includes milk in everything from our morning hot tea to mothers chasing after their kids to get them to drink milk to summertime excitement over ice cream and desi ghee treats at Indian festivals. In order to encourage the growth of dairy farms in the nation, the Indian government has put in place a number of plans and initiatives. The dairy industry also functions as a vehicle for socioeconomic development.

India has been the top milk-producing country in the globe since 1998, and it also has the biggest population of cows. India's milk production rose from 17 million tonnes (MT) in 1950–51 to 176.4 MT in 2017–18, a rise of 6.65% when compared to 165.4 MT in 2016–17. The FAO reports that global milk production rose from 800.2 MT in 2016 to 811.9 MT in 2017, a 1.46 percent increase. Compared to the world's projected average consumption of 294 grammes per day in 2017, the country's per capita milk availability increased from 130 grams per day in 1950–1951 to 374 grams per day in 2017–2018. This suggests that the quantity of milk and milk products will rise steadily to meet the needs of our expanding population.
