Following the demise of blue laws limiting the sale of alcohol in Atlanta and surrounding cities, Capital City Package is now open on Sundays to serve customers.

In early 2011, Georgia governor Nathan Deal signed Senate Bill10 into law, allowing local communities to vote to allow the sale of alcohol in stores on Sundays. Each county approved Sunday liquor sales at different times throughout the year. As of January 8, 2012, Capital City Package extended its hours to serve customers on Sundays. Capital City’s extended hours take into account that new legislation restricts the sale of alcohol before 12:30 p.m. on Sundays. Capital City Package is now open Monday through Thursday from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., on Fridays and Saturdays from 8:00 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. and now on Sundays for 12:30 to 6:00 p.m.

Blue laws are designed to enforce religious standards, especially the observance of the Sabbath on Sundays, through various restrictions on alcohol and shopping. Prior to state legislature and voter approval, Georgia was the only southern state and one of just three states nationwide to still have a ban on the sale of alcohol on Sundays. Georgia became the 37th state to approve Sunday liquor sales registration, dissolving a blue law dating back to the 1800s. Each county in and around Atlanta where voters approved Sunday alcohol sales had varying effective dates ranging from November 20 and stretching months into the following year.

“We’re excited to be able to serve our customers yet another day during the week,” says Capital City Package general manager Mike Merson. “We’ve had a great demand for beer and wine sales on Sunday, so we’re glad to finally be able to offer that to our customers.”
