History

Previously, the park was a hunting reserve for the Maharaja of the Mysore. It was stated a Reserve forest in the year of 1931. Whole area of the Reserve is approximately ninety Km2. The Venugopala Wildlife Park was instituted at this site which was comprehensive up to an area of 800 km2.

In the year 1973, it was affirmed a Tiger Reserve under Project Tiger. The Reserve acknowledged as a National park in the year of 1974. Whole area of the park is approximately 874.2 Km2. The whole area comes under the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve which is one of the most extensive spread territories in India sheltered forests.

The park has a diversity of biomes encompassing dry deciduous forests, moist deciduous forests along with shrub lands. The broad range of habitats supports a varied range of organisms.

The park is bordered by the Kabini River in the north as well as the Moyar River in the south. There are also two negligible streams flowing through the area and the complete area is irrigated by river Moyar plus these two rivulets.
