Iranian parliament, Khomeini’s tomb attacked

The Iranian parliament, the Majlis, and the mausoleum of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, the founder of the Islamic Republic of Iran, near its capital Tehran have been attacked by suicide bombers.

A security guard is said to have been killed in the firefight. Reports said one of the assailants has been killed, another has blown himself up and a third one has been injured. A suicide bomber’s explosive vest has also been discovered and deactivated near the mausoleum.

Iranian news agency IRNA reported that one of the four men who attacked the Majlis has been arrested. A member of Parliament’s foreign Policy and national Security Commission confirmed the arrest of a gunman. Tasnim news agency said eight people have been injured in the shooting on Wednesday.

Press TV said four gunmen with Kalashnikovs and handguns entered the premises of the Majlis and opened fire at security guards. Fars News Agency, in its twitter post, said three gunmen attacked the Imam Khomeini Mausoleum and opened fire on people inside and wounded a number of them.

According to lawmaker Mehdi Kiaee, the situation is under control inside the Majlis, while security forces are working to restore calm there. The assault has forced a lockdown on the legislature.
