Levulinic acid is also known as 4-oxopentanoic acid. It is an organic compound classified as a keto acid. Molecular formula of Levulinic acid is C5H8O3. Levulinic acid is a white crystalline solid. It is soluble in water, polar organic solvents, diethyl ether and ethanol, and insoluble in aliphatic hydrocarbons. Levulinic acid is relatively nontoxic, with an LD50 of 1850 mg/kg. Levulinic acid is used as a precursor for plasticizers, pharmaceuticals, and other additives. Levulinic acid can be produced by high temperature acid hydrolysis of carbohydrates, such as glucose, galactose, sucrose, fructose, chitose and agricultural wastes. Levulinic acid offers several derivatives, such as Methyltetrahydrofuran (MTHF), Gammavalerolactone (GVL), D-amino levulinic acid (DALA), Methyl Butanediol (MeBDO), Diphenolic Acid (DPA) and so on.
