[SANDUSKY, 12/18/2017] -- The number of US adults without health insurance increased by 3.5 million in 2017, a Gallup study found. Except for seniors covered by Medicare, the Gallup-Sharecare survey found that the uninsured rate increased among all major demographic groups.

According to a Vox report, US citizens visit the doctor less than other countries but spend more on healthcare due to the prices of medical services. For example, Humira, an injectable medication used to treat multiple autoimmune diseases, cost $2,669 in the US but only $822 in Switzerland and $1,362 in the UK. A separate medication for heartburn costs $215 in the US while it is only $23 in the Netherlands.

With these price differences, even insured individuals skip seeking medical treatment. A recent Bankrate survey revealed that about 25% of adults have avoided seeking medical attention because of the cost.

Meanwhile, the International Business Times reported that millennials are also avoiding doctors due to rising healthcare costs. Not only do they forgo healthcare in favor of other priorities, but they turn to WebMD and other online medical authorities instead of making appointments.
