Texas man with ALS creates an app to leave a legacy after his death

TurnMyPic is a US patent-pending app that will enable users to write on the back of photos taken in the digital world.

Mauricio Serrano, father of four, was devastated when he learned his diagnosis of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) (a progressive neurodegenerative illness which affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord), but his will to survive for years to come is still alive. He is on track to develop an application that will be a game changer for immortalizing photographs, as well as the numerous business applications it will have. The mobile app will allow the user to write messages on the backs of digital pictures and send them to others.

Currently, he's running an Indiegogo campaign here https://igg.me/at/TurnMyPic in order to raise funds to get his app developed. "I'm not looking to make a lot of money from this app, I'm just hoping to earn enough revenue to start a college fund for my two little ones and give back to the many people battling this senseless disease. ALS has robbed me of a lot of things, but it has not robbed me of my will to live and provide for my family. So I have no choice but to reinvent myself," said a determined Mauricio.

How it happened-
It was a hot summer day in 2012 when Mauricio started feeling the first symptoms of ALS. "I was playing racket ball with my buddies and suddenly I felt my legs get heavy, as if I had magnets on my feet. It was all downhill from there," he adds using a computer controlled by his eyes.

The device he uses-
The computer he uses was donated to him by the Texas ALS association. "This computer is my window to the world, and I thank God every day for it." Thanks to this innovative device, he is able to connect to social media, entertain himself watching movies, and write memoirs and life lessons to his kids..

The idea-
The idea for the TurnMyPic app came to him while looking for pictures to leave his family members so that they would remember the good times when he is no longer here. "I remember looking through my mom's photo albums when I was a kid and turning each photograph on its back to read the messages she had written there." It was in that moment that he wished he could write messages to his four kids describing what was going on in those moments when they were having so much fun. And that was when the idea was born.
Just as we used to write long descriptions on the backs of photographs, we will soon be able to write long descriptions or dedications and save them forever. "This is an app that people like me, people who want to leave behind a solid legacy, can benefit from immensely."
