Marcus Hiles - Personal Values and Your Charitable Donations

Marcus Hiles discusses the link between personal values and charitable donations.

Marcus Hiles is a prominent real estate investor from Texas who is deeply involved with charitable causes that matter to him. If you are like most people, your charitable donations of money and time have started to appear in your life when people started asking you for help, be it in your church, your children’s school or a sports team. Your financial charitable activities are probably somewhat fragmented and may include a donation to a friend who needed to support a charity because he or she was training for a marathon, a gift to Red Cross or Cancer Society in memory of a loved one, or donations to some natural disasters or critical causes.

When you decide to make a bigger impact and donate strategically, you should start with discovering the causes that matter to you. Spending time with people who care about the same issues and donate their time and money to the same nonprofits that you do can lead to a more significant impact for charities and bring you a bigger sense of fulfillment.

For most people, our parents had the largest influence on us during the determinative childhood time. Our parents created our home environments. They exposed us to various learning experiences through trips, conversations, books, and classes. They helped us understand the world around us and made sure we do not cross the lines we are not supposed to cross. They answered our questions and it was them who served as role models for us and our behavior.

When thinking about causes to donate to, think about the place where you grew up and important circumstances about it. Did you belong to any organizations that you would like to help? What activities did you engage in with your parents that you still remember?

Thinking about the present day and the way you live your life today is also important for becoming aware of your values and priorities. Your job, people around you and the activities that you choose to participate all speak about your values. Consider the things, people and experiences in your life that bring you particular joy. What activities bring you closer together with people? What do you do that you’ve been doing for years and yet you still really enjoy doing?

Answering these questions and going through your memories is a significant step towards finding charities that matter to you on a deep level just like educational causes matter a lot to Marcus Hiles.
