Total darkness is an important part of sleep quality. It also helps in the development of antioxidants and the sleep hormone melatonin.

[Red Bank, 5/1/2019] Total darkness is an important part of human life, especially when it comes to sleep quality and mental health. In fact, a study published in the American Journal of Epidemiology showed that sleeping with the light on may put a person at risk of getting depressive symptoms. To help its customers have a better quality of slumber, Window Treats Inc. offers room darkening and blackout shades that afford a variety of control options.

Sleeping in Total Darkness, a Necessity

The paper, entitled “Bedroom Light Exposure at Night and the Incidence of Depressive Symptoms: A Longitudinal Study of the HEIJO-KYO Cohort,” tested different light levels on 863 elderly adults as they slept. The participants also completed sleep diaries and were surveyed about their mental health during the study. Researchers found that over 73 subjects had signs of depression. They also correlated brighter light levels with increased risk of symptoms.

Another study, called “Exposure to Room Light before Bedtime Suppresses Melatonin Onset and Shortens Melatonin Duration in Humans” showed the importance of total darkness to the production of the melatonin hormone. Melatonin is responsible for inducing sleep and is a powerful antioxidant. The study tested the melatonin levels of 116 volunteers when exposed to dim lighting and brighter room lighting during the late evening. The researchers found that the brighter room lighting stifled the participants’ melatonin production, compared to dim lighting.
