There are multiple health issues that may affect your pet. There are various veterinary medicine manufacturers in India that produce the required medications for treating these illnesses. One of the major illnesses that affect dogs is Lyme disease. Lyme disease is a form of bacterial illness that can be transmitted to humans, dogs, and other animals by certain species of ticks.

The disease is caused by the spiral-shaped bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi that is carried by ticks and enters a dog or person’s bloodstream after a tick bite. Once the bacteria enters the bloodstream, it travels to various parts of the body and can cause problems in various organs or joints.

The ticks that carry Lyme disease don’t fly or jump, they can only crawl. This means they are found in tall grasses, thick brush, marshes, and woods. For instance, when your dog brushes against a bush they tick quickly grab onto your dog's fur and crawls in to find a place to bite. The disease can be a hard one to detect and is responsible for a host of health problems.

Symptoms of Lyme disease in dogs:

Fever
Loss of appetite
Reduced energy
Lameness (can be shifting, intermittent, and recurring)
Generalized stiffness, discomfort, or pain
Swelling of joints
Symptoms can progress to fatal conditions like kidney failure, cardiac and neurological problems.

If your vet suspects that your dog has Lyme disease, he will perform various blood tests to reach a diagnosis. The antibody test detects the presence of specific antibodies in the dog's body that is a reaction to the bacteria.

Once Lyme disease has been identified in your pet, your vet will give you a treatment plan. This will include administration of antibiotics for a few weeks. However, if the infection still persists the duration of medication may increase.

Preventing Lyme disease in your dog:

If you have walked your dog through the woods or tall grassy areas, inspect yourself and your dog. On your dog look on the feet, between their toes, on their lips, around eyes, ears, near the anus and under the tail.

The faster you remove a tick from your dog's body the less likely it is that your pet will contract an illness related to tick bites. Use a pair of fine tweezers designed for removing ticks.

You can also ask your vet to conduct a tick exam during each visit. They may find ticks you might have missed.

There are various vet approved flea and tick preparations available in the market that can help you prevent any health issues due to ticks.

Lastly, ensure that your pet is regularly vaccinated. Top veterinary medicine companies in India provide vaccines that help prevent Lyme disease in your dog. Talk to your vet if you have any doubts about this vaccination.

Taking some time out of your day to conduct the steps mentioned above will ensure that your dog is free from Lyme disease or any other disease associated with tick bites.
