Graphene Production to Shoot-Up in North America in Coming Years

Posted September 24, 2020 by Manishbaghel

The global graphene market is expected to grow to $646.8 million by 2030, witnessing a CAGR of 20.2% during the forecast period (2020–2030).

Graphene is an allotrope of carbon, comprising a single layer of carbon atoms that are tightly arranged in a hexagonal honeycomb lattice. In the recent times, there has been a steep rise in the global sales of graphene, primarily because of the widespread usage of the compound in various applications in the medical sector. Due to its high strength and thinness, the material is extensively used for manufacturing bioelectric sensors, which are mainly used for tracking the level of glucose, cholesterol, and hemoglobin in the blood and also those used for testing DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid).

The other major factor fueling the requirement for graphene is the increasing utilization of the compound in various electronics and electrical applications across the world. Due to these factors, the global graphene market is predicted to demonstrate substantial growth in the coming years. Graphene is primarily available in two forms—dispersed and powder. Between the two, the usage of powdered graphene is predicted to be significantly higher in the forthcoming years. This is ascribed to the rising customer preference for powdered graphene over the dispersed one for use in sensors, batteries, and printing technologies.

The other important factor responsible for the surging popularity of powdered graphene is its greater ease of use in comparison to the dispersed and flaky ones. Depending on application, the graphene market is divided into biomedical, composites, electrical and electronics, and energy categories. Amongst these, the composites category will register the fastest growth in the market in the future years. This is because of the increasing usage of the material in metal and polymer composites, due to its higher electrical conductivity and strength.

Globally, the graphene market recorded the highest growth in the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region during the years gone by. This is attributed to the large-scale utilization of the compound in the electrical and electronics, energy, and medical sectors in China. In addition to this, graphene was heavily used in the aerospace and automotive industries of the various APAC countries such as China, South Korea, and India during the last few years, owing to which, the market boomed in the APAC region in the past.

However, in the upcoming years, the North American graphene market will exhibit rapid expansion, according to the forecast of P&S Intelligence, a market research firm based in India. This is credited to the increasing utilization of the compound in composites, which are extensively used in aircrafts, automobiles, and a plethora of electronic and electrical devices. In addition to this, the rising requirement for graphene in the manufacturing of medical instruments is also pushing up the sales of the compound in this region.

Therefore, it can be said without any doubt that the requirement for graphene will increase massively all over the world in the coming years, primarily due to the ballooning usage of the compound in the automotive, aerospace, and electrical and electronics industries and medical sector across the world.
