A Conversation With an Expert: Writing a Compelling Business Proposal

Posted July 22, 2021 by madrigalcomm

This week, we had the chance to attend a virtual panel discussion on written business communications. Additionally, we got the chance to speak with some of the panelists.

In particular, we spoke with Tim Entwisle to learn some useful tips for writing business proposals.

Tim Entwisle has over three decades of experience in communications, infrastructure and project management. Tim is the director of Madrigal Communications, a copywriting agency based in Sydney. During his career, he has provided his expertise to small businesses, government organisations and corporate clients.

Tim was kind enough to share his insights on the process of creating a compelling business proposal.

“Regardless of the industry, nearly every organisation has to create a business proposal. Whether it’s to secure funding or win a contract, writing a high-quality business proposal plays a key role in persuading prospects.

If you’re a first-time writer, I suggest you do your research and look at past successful business proposals. While, I encourage you to take inspiration from them, you must refrain from blatantly copying and pasting at all costs”, shares the expert.

He continues, “It’s helpful to start by creating an outline and follow that to ensure your proposal is well-structured and easy to understand.

Many writers think that using complex jargon will impress buyers, instead that may have the opposite effect. You don’t want to confuse readers with technical terms. It’s best to use simple language and an active tone to keep the readers engaged”.

“Finally, your proposal should be focused on the buyer’s requirements. Your efforts will not succeed if you’re just singing your praises. Make sure your business proposal highlights how your product or service can be beneficial to the buyer”, concludes Tim.
