Things to Know About Bollards and Their Decorative Values

Posted April 30, 2018 by LucasG

Bollards are short vertical posts that are installed on the streets to improve pedestrian safety and security. Bollards have been a vital part of civilisation since the beginning of the 18th century.

Few Interesting Facts About Bollards:

Early bollards were used to anchor large ships at docks; they are still used today with few modifications. Marine bollards are made of cast iron or steel and somewhat like a mushroom. The design and functionality of these bollards are different from that of traffic/ road bollards in Sydney. Today these products are also used for landscaping and other architectural purposes. The first street bollards used in the 19th century were unused cannons. They were fixed on the roads as boundary posts that marked different lanes for vehicles and pedestrians. After these cannons were used up, iron castings of similar shape were manufactured to serve the same functions. Since then bollards have evolved into various shapes and sizes which are placed on roads in urban areas. These are also used outside supermarkets, hotels, shops, stadium, entrance to an event etc.

Although the standard type of bollard is quite a dull-looking steel post, specially manufactured bollards include a wide variety of decorative designs. They come in metallic paint and powder coat finishes. Most of the traffic bollards are cylindrical in shapes- with a dome or angle or flat cap. These can be used as temporary bollards when they are needed to limit access to traffic to specific locations. These are available in both retractable and fold-down styles which help bollards to easily collapse to ground and erect as required. These kinds of bollards are either manually operated or automated by hydraulic movements.

Architectural Utility Of Bollards:

With the increasing fondness for aestheticism in the cities, architectural bollards in Sydney are used. Decorative bollards are widely used for structural and landscaping purposes. These bollards are manufactured with the aim to decorate towns and streets. They are used as standalone architectural or landscaping features to border or define a space. Architectural bollards are designed to harmonise with both traditional and contemporary styles. Traditionally designed bollards can be used to match various historical ages; however, contemporary items adhere to visual simplicity, unlike the traditional ones.
