Loxdale English Centre offers total immersion General English for better learning

Recent research has underlined just how difficult it can be to learn English. Starting from a low level of proficiency or as a beginner can be extremely challenging in a regular classroom. Loxdale English Centre takes its approach from latest studies in English learning, using a programme that involves total immersion in English language and life to enhance and speed up the learning process.

“General English is a lively and imaginative programme that helps students learn to communicate confidently and fluently in everyday English,” says Zoe Smith, Marketing Officer for Loxdale English Centre. “It's great fun to learn English in the company of like minded people from all around the world.”

Each lesson focuses on developing the skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing. Lessons allow maximum time to learn and practise new vocabulary, grammar, colloquial English and idioms. “Loxdale's unique teaching programme also offers you the chance to personalise your learning experience by choosing extra subjects to learn about in and through English,” says Smith.

“The English Through programme offers subjects such as exam preparation, history, film, art appreciation, business English, creative writing, music appreciation and even writing a children’s book,” explains Smith. This highly popular option allows English to come alive through matters of interest to individual students. They can then be built on in further English PLUS courses.

Loxdale also offers a varied lecture series. A weekly lecture on a Tuesday morning focuses on aspects of British life. “We make study time as stimulating and enlightening as possible,” says Smith. “Past topics have included things to do in London, British history, presentation techniques, the Brighton music scene, London architecture, street art, homelessness, acupuncture and nutrition.”

In addition to the lecture series, students enjoy short 30 minute talks on a Monday morning. These talks explore topics in British history and culture, such as Stonehenge, London museums, St George's Day, Guy Fawkes, Cambridge, The South Downs and Christmas in Victorian England.

Britain Today focuses on contemporary British society. There are two lessons each week on different aspects of modern Britain. These cover important topics such as the legal system, welfare system, education system and political and legal systems in the UK today. This is of great assistance to students wishing to complete IELTS or those interested in pursuing settlement or further studies.

The General English course is open to students aged 16 and over. There are 25 lessons per week, amounting to 15 hours. The number of weeks over which the course can be taken is flexible. Students can choose to stay for one week up to 30 weeks. “Courses begin every Monday,” says Smith. “And all classes are limited to 14 students to ensure maximum attention and participation.”

Plenty of accommodation is available in Brighton. “One of the best ways to truly immerse yourself in the culture and language of a county is to choose a homestay option,” says Smith. “This is renting a room in the home of a local family, so there is plenty of opportunity to practise and learn.”

Other accommodation options include staying in a local hotel, bed and breakfast or private rental or Air BnB. “If you choose to live in a bed and breakfast or a hotel, our Accommodation and Welfare Officer is very happy to help make a reservation for you,” says Smith.

“We do not recommend private rentals as it does tend to stop students from speaking as much English as they would if they lived with a host family,” Smith explains. “However, if a student wishes we are happy to advise about where they might look for their own flat or house.”

Loxdale English Centre's General English course is the perfect place to gain confidence and fluency in English. The Summer General English course welcomes beginners while the standard General English course is open to students who have some proficiency in English. “English opens doors and Loxdale opens the doors to English,” concludes Smith.
