Atlanta Dog Expert Exhorts Pet Owners to Protect Their Pets from Extreme Heat

Dog Walker Atlanta cautions pet owners to safeguard their house pets from the extreme heat by following four simple tips.

The summer season can be a challenge-- even unsafe--for individuals and dogs, alike. It's tough enough just dealing with increasing temperature levels. However, add the high humidity levels and intermittent power outages and you've got a recipe for trouble -- especially for your canine friends.

Here's what you need to know about keeping your dog safe in extreme heat conditions.

1. Keep Pets from Hot Vehicles

A spokesperson from Dog Walker Atlanta had this to say about keeping your pets safe during the summer, 'Even if you only plan to be in the store for a minute, never leave your pets outside - in your vehicle.

It only takes a moment for the heat to do irreparable damage to your canine's internal organs; especially during the month of August, when temperatures can reach 100+ degrees inside of an enclosed vehicle.'

2. Provide Sufficient Shade and Shelter for Outdoor Pets

Anytime your furry friend is outdoors, make sure she is adequately protected from the sun by stocking her play area with ample water. It also helps to provide a shaded area that your pets can use to avoid direct sunlight exposure.

3. Don't Rely Too Heavily on Using Fans to Cool Your Pets

While fans can help cool you and your family off, pets react differently to heat than we do--as people. For instance, dogs primarily sweat through their feet as opposed to their bodies. Hence, fans are not as effective a means of cooling pets as efficiently as they are with humans.

4. Effective Methods of Cooling Your Pets

The best way to protect your pet during the hotter months is to ensure that they are cool, inside and out. You can accomplish this by giving your puppy lots of water. Even if your pet stays indoors, remember to keep her hydrated.

Another way to keep your house pets cool - when it's sweltering hot outside - is to use a cooling vest or body cover.

Soak these items in cold water, and they can retain their low-temperature for as long as three days. Another thing that you can do, if your pet doesn't mind bathing is to give your pet a nice cooling soak.

Heed these tips and you shouldn't have a problem keeping your furry friend cool during the month of August.
