Globalization and the New Rulers of the World... steps toward globalization

Globalization and the New Rulers of the World

Numerous films, audio, and written materials are available for mass public screaming about the negative side of globalization, ugly politics, and so on. However, none of them provides any details or explains what this truly means, how the world has come to this point. John Pilger's documentary “The New Rulers of the World” is another type of movie since it goes quite far, to the beginning of so-called globalization and explains it in the most analytical details.

Globalization means the integration and unification of economic, politics, and culture in the world. Consequently, the global economy expereiences the division of labor, the movemet of capital, labor, and productive resources. All countries’ legislation is standardized while their economic and technological processes are , as well as the interrelationship of cultures of different countries. In “The New Rulers of the World” Pilger express his point of view on globalization and says that “the facts of globalization show that a small group of powerful men are now richer than most of population of Africa.” He explains the results of globalization by giving an example of Indonesia. On the one hand, people, who make Nike clothes, must work for at least 16 hours a day in inhumane conditions for 1$ per day, but they have no choice. On the other hand, famous golfer Tiger Woods is paid more to promote Nike and its products than all those people who make them. Pilger examines globalization as a process that enslaves the many in order to afford an opportunity to the few who benefit from it. Globalization causes a contradictory perception of its prospects and consequences, which requires an awareness of the essence of the processes, occurring in the global economic space.

Globalization significantly influences the environment. For instance, international trade leads to the deterioration of the state of the environment in those countries where environmental costs are not considered in price determination. Those countries gain comparative advantages in eco-dangerous activities. Some states even change their environmental regulations to attract foreign investors. Globalization also affects agricultural workers. While it provides export possibilities, only some farmers benefit from it such as Kenyan, African, and Latin American farmers who have found a niche market in the European markets or the supply fair trade outfits. At the same time, other rest agricultural workers suffer from globalization as it ifluences local markets.
All people, including me, participate in globalization and they can reduce its negative impact. At least, while buying clothes in a shop, I can ask the retailer where this product comes from, the working conditions of the factory where it is produced. I can also demand assurances that this product comes from a factory that treats its workers well and gives them rights to be able to form trade unions. However, 3 things can be done to change the situation. First, business owners must put people first, consider their interests and needs. Second, any nation must reassert control over its development. Specifically, all countries must be free from the ideological influence of the IMF and the World Bank. Finally, the poor should be given pritority, or at least, the list of the countries that have a duty-free access to export should be expandeds.

The processes of globalization requir serious changes in the whole system of international relations. Globalization is the process of forming a single and integral world and no one can stop it by any means, but its negative effects on the environment and the well-being of people in poor countries must be reduced or eliminated.
