Copper is an important material that has been used for many applications, from electrical wiring and building construction to interior design and decorative arts. Valued for its electrical conductivity and high thermal properties, it is chiefly used in electrical components. It is also prized for its beautiful appearance and patina. Due to its malleability and ease of use, copper can be manufactured in a number of products, including copper sheet.

Copper sheet is made from copper cakes that are rolled into coil form and then manufactured into sheets. Copper coils can produce copper plates, foils, strips and a variety of other products. Each of these products is fabricated in a wide range of thicknesses and widths, depending on its intended application. A sheet is generally available in gauges ranging from 0.010" up to 0.125" and can be customized in widths as requested by the customer. When looking at different gauges of copper sheets, the term "mil" is used. "Mil" is not an abbreviation of "millimeter," instead it is an industry term that refers to the thickness in copper sheeting without the use of the millimeter measurement.

Although mainly used in its pure metal form, copper can be manufactured as an alloy in order to make it stronger and less affected by corrosion. Brass is formed when zinc is added, making it harder and more resistant to corrosion. Bronze is created when tin, nickel, aluminum or, less commonly, silicon or manganese is added, giving it more heft and strength. Cupronickel, or copper-nickel, provides added protection against the effects of water, seawater and sulfuric compounds. Copper-clad steel and copper-clad aluminum wires are also examples of copper-strengthening materials that impart additional safeguards from deterioration and corrosive environments. There are many other proprietary alloys, each designed for specific applications that conform to strict industry measures for quality, consistency and safety.

Copper sheet is utilized across several different industries, mostly for its conductivity and anti-corrosive alloy components. In construction, copper sheet is used for roof shingles and flashing that offers protection from the elements. In the automotive industry, copper rotors are used for improved performance of hybrid and electric-powered vehicles, due to their superior conductivity and electrical propulsion capabilities. Copper-nickel hydraulic brake tubes are less corrosive and longer lasting than steel and coated steel, the previously used materials. Copper sheet is unsurpassed for use in electrical components: general-purpose electric, induction and rotor motors. lithium buss bars maintain controlled energy efficiency and savings with its conductive properties and heat dissipation. Copper sheets are also replacing aluminum printed circuit boards (as well as integrated circuits) because of its dual-purpose assets - conductivity and durability.

Copper sheet is also used for decorative purposes. Because it forms a patina from oxidation, copper adds depth and interest to a space over time or with specialized chemicals that speed up the oxidation process. Interior surfaces such as backsplashes, bars and ceiling tiles create a warm, inviting look that only improves with age and use. Since copper is naturally ductile, it can be stamped and shaped in numerous ways for a highly customized appearance that is both durable and unique.
