RPG games have very specific game mechanics that enable players to choose from several types of playable heroes, develop their character using skills and abilities, complete quests to gain XP, level up and wear suitable equipment to boost stats. The ultimate and final end game goal is defeating powerful bosses or other creatures in challenging encounters. MMO games are any types of games that support massive amounts of players, the most popular online games are MMORPGs. There are lots of companies that develop online games: Blizzard Entertainment, Trion Worlds, NcSoft, Funcom, Nexon and many more. At the beginning of the MMO era, online games required an initial purchase fee and a monthly subscription but, in the last few years, the number of free online games surpassed the pay to play ones.

The first thing that players need to do when starting their adventure is to choose the game server and all MMO games have at least 2 types of servers. PvE servers are most suitable for players that like to quest and take on AI challenges like raid bosses. PvP servers are for players that prefer to fight other human opponents. RP servers are for those that spend their time getting familiar with the game’s lore and like to organize and take part in RP events, some RPG games have mixed PvPRP and RPPvE servers. The difference between PvP and PvE servers is not the game content but the rules that apply when players fight each other. On PvE servers, players can battle each other only if both of them agree but on PvP servers players can get attacked almost anytime.

After choosing a game server, all RPG games require players to create a playable character. In most cases, there are 3 choices: faction, race and class. According to the lore, MMO games have 2 or more factions that are at war with each other, the faction choice will decide who you will be fighting in PvP battles. A faction contains more races, each race can have certain benefits but, in most cases race choice is not that important as long as it supports your class choice. The chosen class will determine your play style, role in a team, weapons you can use and wearable equipment. Some games don’t have a fixed class system, players can change their fighting technique or weapons anytime in game. Because all players want to feel and look unique, RPG games have lots of character customization options, players choose skin color, constitution, hair style and color and accessories for their characters.

All MMO games have similar mechanics when it comes to grouping up with other players and fighting monsters, this mechanic is based on the idea of threat generating abilities. When a player hits a monster, he or she generates a certain amount of threat. If both players attack a monster at the same time, the monster will retaliate and focus its attacks against the player that generated the most threat. RPG games online rely on players performing one of the following roles: tank (heavy armor, mediocre dps, generates good threat to keep monsters attention), dps (light or medium armor, very good dps, medium to low threat generating abilities) and healer (light or medium armor, low dps, heals team members especially the tank). Not all classes can perform the same roles so when making a character make sure to check what roles are available. MMO games are most fun when played with a reliable team of buddies.
