As companies resume in-office operations after the pandemic, business broadband usage has significantly increased—more than doubling on peak days—according to the latest OpenVault Broadband Insights (OVBI) report.
Data from OpenVault’s cloud-based network monitoring and management tools shows a 102.6% rise in upstream usage and a 105% increase in downstream traffic on peak days since the end of 2021. "Peak day" refers to the weekday with the highest average data usage in a particular category.
The Q1 2025 edition of the OVBI provides the most in-depth look yet at how broadband usage patterns differ between business and residential users. It also analyzes how peak usage varies by year, weekday, and hour—helping broadband providers better prepare for traffic spikes, particularly in upstream bandwidth.

Key Insights from Q1 2025 OVBI
• Total broadband usage grew by 9.5% in Q1 2025, reaching 663.2 GB—the highest growth rate in a quarter since 2022.
• Average monthly upstream usage climbed 17.6% to 47.5 GB, marking the largest Q1 year-over-year increase since 2021.
• The number of super power users (those using over 2 TB per month) has surged nearly 30 times since 2018, growing from 0.16% to 4.88% in Q1 2025.
This report also introduces a Usage Tier Volatility Index, which tracks how subscribers move between data usage tiers. It shows that higher-usage subscribers are more likely to shift tiers:
• Only 14% of users in the 0–100 GB range changed tiers in the next month.
• In contrast, 39% of those consuming 1 TB or more moved to a different tier.
• Between February and March 2025, 23.4% of all users shifted their usage tier.
“These trends—including the surge in super power users and frequent tier changes—are creating a more unpredictable environment for broadband providers,” the report notes. “To manage peak demand, shifts in user behavior, and high-traffic events, providers must take a proactive approach with network management tools like PNM and PMA.”
