Shortness of Breath Caused by Arrhythmia

Why do people feel breathless? It can be explains about abnormal heart rhythms, called arrhythmias, which can be quite a worrisome symptom.

If you've been feeling breathless, you get puffed out taking the stairs, you’re feeling dizzy or fainting or you have chest pain you may have an arrhythmia. An arrhythmia is an irregular heartbeat. Lots of people can have arrhythmias and they can be caused transiently in response to too much caffeine, sports drinks or a night on the town.

If you have an illness like pneumonia or you’ve had pericarditis (inflammation of the lining of the heart) due to a viral infection you could have irregular heartbeats.

Having asthma can increase the likelihood of an arrhythmia because you may not get enough oxygen to your heart so it’s essential that your asthma is properly controlled.

Some arrhythmias are temporary and harmful and may not be picked up until your doctor detects it during a routine check.

If you experience breathlessness, wheezing, dizziness, light-headedness or fainting or you have any chest pain you should seek emergency medical care.

Some arrhythmias that can cause breathlessness include atrial fibrillation, AV Nodal re-entrant Tachycardia (fast heartbeat caused by an extra pathway through the AV node of the heart), bradycardia (slow heartbeat) and heart block (a blockage of the heart’s electrical signals). Some types of arrhythmia are dangerous so it’s important to seek medical advice if you are experiencing symptoms of breathlessness or a tight chest.
