Social Distress Low for Colorectal Cancer Patients, Study Says

Lewisville, TX – Facing the rigors of cancer diagnosis and treatment can be a burden for anyone personally, socially and professionally. For those who suffer from colorectal cancer the social implications tend to be of big concern for patients, their families and caregivers. Researchers are finding, however, that social distress is not commonly reported among patients who face down this disease and the treatments that often go along with it.

“Although highly treatable when caught early, colorectal cancer can require some less-than-desirable intervention treatments,” explains Dr. Gregory Echt, founder and lead surgeon at Lewisville Flower Mound Oncology. “From the uncomfortable nature of routine screening procedures, such as a colonoscopy, to the occasional need for temporary or permanent colostomies, this form of cancer is perceived to carry a potential social stigma. Researchers are finding out, however, that the perception doesn’t always play out in practice.”

To find out more about the social distress levels of colorectal cancer patients, researchers at the Leeds Institute of Cancer and Pathology asked some 21,000 patients to complete questionnaires. When all was said and done, only about 15 percent of patients reported a level of social distress.

“The findings are very encouraging for those facing down this disease in that they indicate strong social support systems in place before diagnosis tend to remain so after,” says Dr. Echt. “The findings also indicate that a segment of the population undergoing colorectal cancer treatment would greatly benefit from targeted support help.”

Facing any form of cancer without proper social support can be a difficult challenge. With that in mind, those who are diagnosed are urged to seek out support. Healthcare providers are also urged to help patients in need of support connect with those who can assist them in weathering what lies ahead in regard to treatment and post-treatment recovery periods.
