Parents are always trying to keep the kids safe while giving them the distance they need to learn independence. One way to help manage this balancing act is to use child tracking services, which use GPS technology and are becoming more readily available and easy to use.

Interested in finding out more? We sat down with Letstrak, a company which offers a suite of family safety products, to find out how child tracking works and compare the various products available.

How does child tracking work?

According to Letstrak, it depends on the service and the company. But generally, child tracking uses GPS (global position system) to pinpoint a person’s location on a map via satellite. Only the account holder can see the location of your kids, and most companies make it a priority to ensure that accounts are encrypted and secure. Before choosing a service, make sure that the company uses SSL (secure sockets layer), a reliable form of encryption on the Internet.

There are dedicated GPS services, but many phones and smart phones are already GPS-enabled, in which case it’s no extra effort to enable the tracking software. Plus, enabling your phone means you have one less thing to carry around.

How might child tracking help my family?
You can use a GPS tracker to:
check that your kids have made it to school
track teens who have just begun driving
let any family member know your location when on trips

Am I paranoid if I use a child tracking?

Child tracking, as a service, isn’t in itself paranoid – it all comes down to how you use it. For example, if you’re the kind of parent who might check the location of your kids every five minutes, then you are probably abusing the purpose of the application.

However, if you use the application to ensure your children’s safety, then you shouldn’t be concerned about the ‘paranoia’ claim. As a parent, you know what’s best for your family.
