In a move to make all public transport vehicles safer for passengers and particularly women, soon these will need to install GPS or any other vehicle tracking device, alert button and CCTV cameras.

The road transport ministry on Monday issued draft notification specifying transport vehicles with seating capacity of more than 23 will need to have all the three features and vehicles with less than 23 seats must install vehicle tracking device and emergency button."The tracking device, alert button and CCTV surveillance system devices shall be fitted by the manufacturer or the dealer or the respective operators, as the case may be," the draft said.

In January 2014, UPA had approved the first project under the Nirbhaya fund for installation of panic buttons, CCTV cameras and GPS devices in public transport vehicles in 32 cities.

However, the project has not taken off yet. The government had announced the Nirbhaya fund after a 23-year-old woman was brutally gang-raped in a moving bus in Delhi in December 2012.

The objective of the project was to help map routes of public vehicles, tracking vehicles on the route, alerting violations through visual and text signals, and a panic button to alert police in case of emergency.
Two-wheelers, goods carriers and any other transport vehicle that does not require permit under the Motor Vehicle law would be kept out of this order, the ministry's draft notification said.
