Leptin is a hormone produced primarily by fat cells (adipocytes). Its primary function is to regulate appetite and energy balance. When fat stores increase, leptin levels rise, signaling the brain (specifically the hypothalamus) to reduce hunger and increase energy expenditure. Conversely, low leptin levels indicate starvation, triggering hunger and energy conservation.
In theory, this feedback system should prevent obesity. However, in practice, many overweight individuals develop a condition known as leptin resistance, where the brain becomes desensitized to leptin’s signals. As a result, the body continues to feel hungry and stores more fat, even when leptin levels are high.
