NEW YORK - US group Johnson & Johnson announced on Tuesday that it will stop selling its talc-based baby Talcum Powder in the USA and Canada, whose sales had already declined due to changing habits and mistrust of the product.
The pharmaceutical and hygiene products company has in fact faced thousands of complaints in recent years accusing its talc of containing asbestos and causing cancer and has been condemned on several occasions in this context.
Johnson & Johnson has always claimed, however, that its babyTalcum powder does not contain asbestos and does not cause cancer.
Even if they suspend the sale, they intend to continue to “vigorously”defend the product and its safety to gain the trust of the people.
But “as part of a product portfolio review conducted in March following the outbreak of COVID-19, Johnson & Johnson's consumer health products division stopped shipping hundreds of products to consumers. Talcum Powder Attorney in USA and Canada to prioritize products in high demand and to allow social distancing in manufacturing plants and delivery warehouses, the group said in a statement.
In the process, they decided to permanently suspend the sale of around 100 products in the United States and Canada, including talc-based baby powder.
“Demand for Johnson & Johnson talc-based baby powder in North America had already declined due in large part to changes in consumer habits,” the group said. And this decline has been "accelerated by misinformation about product safety and a constant round of publicity prompting complaints" against the powder, they added.
The product will still be available in countries where “there is significant consumer demand”.

The United States Supreme Court on Tuesday refused to take up an appeal from the American pharmaceutical group Johnson & Johnson, effectively validating its order to pay $ 2.1 billion in damages and interest for the sale of talc accused of having caused cancer.
The highest American court has not, in accordance with custom, justified its decision which puts an end to years of proceedings and could have an impact on other class actions or "class actions".

Johnson & Johnson has always claimed that its baby powder does not contain asbestos and does not cause cancer.
They have been convicted on several occasions, notably in 2018 by a jury that had consolidated several cases and ordered to pay $ 4.7 billion in damages to 22 plaintiffs.

At last, the Court had estimated that the group knowingly sold the product to consumers containing harmful asbestos that can cause severe damage to physical, mental and emotional health.
After this judgement, Johnson & Johnson had appealed to the Missouri Supreme Court which had simply refused. Then the group goes to the highest court in the country to appeal, which is again refused.
The group had argued that the class action including plaintiffs from other states violated its rights, and contested the amount deemed punitive of the sums awarded.
It is not related to “product safety,” Johnson & Johnson insisted.
Two Supreme Court justices recuse themselves. According to the American press, Samuel Alito owns shares in the group and Brett Kavanaugh's father worked as a lobbyist for the company.
While maintaining its innocence, Johnson & Johnson stopped selling their Talcum powder in May 2020 in various countries because of the declined sale and 'mistrust of the product.
