Laura Motes Reflects On A Career In Policing

Posted June 7, 2016 by lauramotes

Before making the decision to study for her Master’s degree in Nursing, Laura Motes enjoyed 21 years as part of the Athens-Clarke County Police Department

Laura Motes began her police career in the Uniform Patrol Division at Athens-Clarke County Police Department after having completed her studies at Georgia Southern University, where she received her Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and Management Information Systems in 1992. She was also commissioned as a second lieutenant in the United States Army and attended Military Officer Basic Training before joining the force, graduating with honors in early 1993.

All of this prepared her for her role in the police, where she rose to the rank of Sergeant during a 21-year career, 10 of which were spent serving as a Police Sergeant in the Uniform Patrol Division where she started her career.

Laura Motes quickly developed a reputation for quality police work for a number of reasons. Firstly, she understands the benefits of effective communication at all levels of the department, be it with fellow officers, superior officers or the people that she was assigned to help. She is able to adjust the communication techniques that she uses so that she can quickly adapt to new situations and demonstrate a high level of confidence in everything that she does.

Said confidence was developed, in part, because of her focus on her own professional development. She dedicated more than 2,000 hours to training once she joined the police force, allowing her to learn a range of new skills that allowed her to perform her duties to a higher standard, in addition to preparing herself for the role of Sergeant later on down the line.

She is also able to maintain her cool in stressful situations, which proved useful in a variety of ways. Not only was she able to stay collected when dealing with potential criminals, but she was also able to deal with the administrative tasks that come with being a Sergeant, ensuring her fellow officers were able to do their jobs more effectively.

Laura Motes made the decision to leave Athens-Clarke County Police Department after 21 years because she wants to provide a service to the public in a different way. She hopes to begin her studies in nursing in the fall of 2016.
