Using Chemo Cold Caps during Chemotherapy

Dr. Neeraja Dasari explains how chemo cold caps are used by cancer patients to preserve their hair while undergoing chemotherapy treatment.

Irving, TX, Dec 26, 2018 – Chemo cold caps are strap-on helmet-type hats that help to preserve hair during chemotherapy. The caps are filled with a gel coolant which has been chilled from 15 – 400F. They work by narrowing blood vessels under the skin of the scalp to reduce the amount of chemotherapy medicine reaching hair follicles. The cold in the caps reduces hair follicle activity to help slow down cell division and minimize the effect of chemotherapy medicine on the follicles.

“Cold caps are recommended to be worn for 50 minutes before the infusion process and will continue to be worn during the process and three hours after.” Explained Dr. Dasari. “The more they are worn, the more effective they are in preserving your hair. Because the caps are icy, you may get a headache. Therefore you have to ensure you dress warmly when using them."

Patients using cold caps during their chemotherapy sessions are advised to baby their hair. This means:

• No hot rollers, blow drying or straightening irons.
• Shampooing only on every third day with a gentle shampoo and cold water.
• No coloring of hair for three months until the chemotherapy is done.
• Gentle combing and brushing of hair.

While planning to use cold caps, you have to understand that cold caps may not work for everyone. Preserving of hair may depend on the number of chemotherapy courses you’ll have, the drug regimen and dosage and also the method of administration.

“If you are planning to use cold caps, you should get the doctor’s help to determine if they are right for you,” continued Dr. Dasari. “Some factors should be considered such as your chemotherapy regimen and the status of your health."
