Understanding the Risk Factors for Breast Cancer

Dr. Kiran Kancharia explains the various risk factors for breast cancer.

Irving, Texas, July 1, 2019 – A patient’s risk for breast cancer can be due to various factors. Being a woman and age are the main factors that can influence one’s risk. Women of 50 years and above are the most diagnosed with breast cancer.

“Some patients can be diagnosed breast cancer without the risk factors,” explained Dr. Kancharia. “Also, not all the risk factors lead to having breast cancer. That is why it is best to consult with the doctor regarding screening and the various ways to help lower your risk for breast cancer.”

Below are some of the breast cancer risk factors that cannot be changed:

• Reproductive history – Research has proven that girls who get their menstrual periods before age 12 are at high risk for breast cancer. Women who start menopause after 55 years of age are exposed to hormones that raise their risk.

• Previous radiation therapy treatment – Women who have undergone radiation therapy for the treatment of Hodgkin's lymphoma before the age of 30 have an increased risk of getting breast cancer.

• Genetic mutations – The inherited genetic mutations such as BRCA1 and BRCA2 expose women to high risks of breast cancer.

• History of breast cancer – The risk for breast cancer increases in women with first-degree relatives (a sister, daughter or mother) who have had breast cancer before.Certain non-cancerous breast diseases such as lobular carcinoma in situ increase breast cancer risk. A personal history of breast cancer also exposes women to breast cancer recurrence.

• Dense breasts – Dense breasts consist of more connective tissue compared to the fatty tissue. This prevents mammograms from detecting tumors within the breasts. That is why women with dense breasts are likely to develop breast cancer.

“Many other factors like exposure to cancer-causing chemicals, smoking, and hormonal changes can also raise the risk for breast cancer,” continued D. Kancharia. “It is recommended that those at high risk get regular screening to help detect the disease early.”
